Recently we celebrated National Reconciliation week (27th May-3rd June) in the Junior Kindy. Throughout the week we focused on creating meaningful experiences with the children to help foster a stronger sense of pride, knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander histories, beliefs and cultures.
Together we researched the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags to find out what the colours and patterns represent. We read dreamtime stories and talked about the symbols found in the artwork. The group engaged in dot paintings, line drawings and instrument making.
We are beginning to introduce Jagera and Turrbal words into our everyday routine and the children’s response is very positive. I’m sure if you ask any one of the Junior Kindy kids, they would be happy to share with you everything they have learnt.
