The thinking that we shared about pirates, islands and volcanoes as this idea emerged in the first few weeks of the year continue to add new elements to our programme. We’ve enjoyed a pirate afternoon tea with pirate yoga. We’ve created a volcano and explored the science behind the ‘lava’ that bubbles out. We’ve used boxes to build a robot pirate that we can wear, and a pirate ship we can ride in. The planning conversations that we have together incorporate the knowledge we already have about some of these ideas (what lives on an island and what lives in the sea around it, for example) and add to our vocabulary so we are then capable of increasingly sophisticated discussions. Science, maths and literacy concepts are woven through each of the steps we take as we move this project forward.
