Each morning in Junior Kindy we have been beginning our day with an acknowledgement of the traditional owners of this land – the Turrbal and Jagera people. This is to encourage an understanding and respect of the history of this land ‘Kurilpa’: place of the water rat. Each morning we join with the Kindergarten children in our outdoor area to share this experience together. We also asked the children to take a moment of quiet to look around, listen and think about their outdoor environment. This is called Dajirri, meaning deep listening. Then the children have the opportunity to share their thoughts on what they heard, thought or felt. They noticed the birds singing, the wind, sunshine, machinery, sticks on the ground and a passing aeroplane. This experience encourages our children to be aware, think about their environment, be still and be mindful.
